Air Canada Plans to Launch Low-Cost Carrier

Air Canada is eyeing the budget carrier market and, with the growing popularity of low-cost carriers, they know that people want cheap flights.  Air Canada chief executive Calin Rovinescu says that they are seeing the ability of these budget carriers to hone in on and capture the market of the legacy airlines.  As Air Canada works hard to change the way it does business, launching a budget carrier of their own has become a priority.

Rovinescu says that Air Canada has to get involved in the budget market in one way or another, but was not forthcoming about details pertaining to the potential future low-cost carrier.  He said there are three or four successful models and they have not yet decided which one they would use.  Air Canada did try to get into the budget carrier market before, with Zip Airlines, but the airline had too few planes, which made it difficult to compete with WestJet.
