AirAsia flight QZ8501 goes missing

An AirAsia flight on its way from Indonesia to Singapore went missing early Sunday morning. The Airbus 320-200 lost contact with air traffic control in Jakarta at 6:17 am. There were 162 people on board: 155 passengers and seven crew members. The pilots asked to change course from 32,000 feet to 38,000 feet to avoid bad weather; shortly after that, the flight disappeared off of radar. The plane has been in service since 2008 and in that time, flew 13,600 flights. The carrier has never had a fatal accident in the 20 years it’s been running. So far, AirAsia has announced that most of the passengers were Indonesian; the remainder of the passengers were three South Koreans, one Frenchman, 1 Briton, and 1 Malaysian.
