Congress wants to stop Norwegian Airlines from offering cheap flights to the U.S.

Lawmakers introduced an amendment to block Norwegian Airlines from offering low-cost flights to the U.S., leading people to speculate if it’s about competition or safety. The amendment, added in June, is meant to stop Norwegian Airlines from operating at all in the United States.

According to John Byerly, who works as a consultant for the airline, for Congress to prevent it from offering these flights, it would be an “affront” to the consumer, the tourism industry, and aerospace manufacturers.

The representatives who championed the measure said the airline hires incompetent pilots; Norwegian officials say that to question their safety is slanderous and opponents are simply scared of the competition.
