Ultra Cheap Flights to Flood Australian Market

It’s coming as the September school holidays approach, a full-on airfare war in Australia as a result of Virgin Australia’s attempts to steal Qantas passengers.  The business press is one of the only sources printing the news about this capacity war that is waging between the two biggest domestic airlines in Australia.  The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation reports that from September the number of commercial seats available will increase by 21%.  Compare this to the 5%-7% per year increase the airlines usually see.

It is common to see cheap flights throughout the year, particularly during the low season, which is February-March and October-November.  However, there is about to be an all out war and even Tiger Airways, which now has its full fleet in operation once again, is getting in on the fun.  Sources in the industry say that Virgin is planning a capacity increase of 17%-18% and Qantas is looking at a 13% increase.
