WestJet Celebrates Encore Days before Its Inaugural Flight

On Thursday, hundreds were gathered at WestJet’s headquarters in Calgary as the airline celebrated its new Encore service.  The two new Bombardier Q400 aircraft were on hand for people to view and excitement was in the air, particularly for the new crew of Encore.  WestJet has been two years getting Encore off the ground, a new service that will compete with Air Canada for the smaller regional markets in Canada.

Encore will make its first flights on Monday, flying to two new destinations, Nanaimo and Fort St. John.  They will also fly to Victoria, Vancouver, and Saskatoon.  WestJet has hired more than 100 employees during the past few months, including flight attendants, pilots, schedulers, dispatchers, avionics technicians, and mechanics.  WestJet Encore president Ferio Pugliese said in five years’ time, when the new airline reaches maturity, it will employ more than 1800 people and will have a fleet of 45 aircraft.
