WestJet Christmas Marketing Stunt Warming Hearts

The WestJet Christmas Miracle advertisement is taking Facebook by storm.  The ad shows a virtual Santa Claus hearing gift requests from kids at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport and Hamilton’s John C. Munro International Airport.  Parents stand by and look fascinated that Santa knows their children’s names.  The end of the ad shows WestJet teaming up with retailers to deliver gifts via the baggage conveyor belt.

According to Queen’s School of Business assistant professor Tandy Thomas, the ad has gone viral with incredible speed.  Thomas said the ad is creating an emotional bond with WestJet because the ad itself is an emotional experience.  However, Thomas does not think that the ad is enough to make people switch to WestJet and his colleague, John-Kurt Pliniussen, doesn’t think so, either.  The reason?  People choose their travel options based primarily on price.
