Ask any Mumbaiker what he is most looking forward to about summertime and invariably the answer is Alphonso mangos! By March, mouths are already watering and the market is abuzz with excitement about the sticky season to come.
For the first week, farmers cash in on this insatiable Mumbai addiction and everyone complains about the extortionate price. By May, however, the price plummets, allowing everyone the chance to go a little mango mad.

Alphonso mango farmers in Mumbai take their business very seriously: the fruits are matured the old-fashioned way, over beds of hay in mud huts to yield the sweetest, juiciest mangos in the world.

Check out any of the markets, from the 130-year old Crawford Market to the conveniently located Colaba market, to choose from the pick of this year's crop. All through the streets, carts and baskets overflow with the luscious yellow fruit, bursting with ripe flesh and sweet juice. They're here in opulent variety, but you can tell a true Mumbaiker by the way he dismisses all but the exquisitely-shaped Alphonso mango. The king of fruits.

After the month-long mango madness in May, the monsoon in June comes sweeping through to wash all that stickiness away. The perfect system, don't you think?
