Buddha Purnima (Vesak)

9 - 10 May 2009 (annual)
Hours: All day and night
Cost: Free
This day marks the birth and enlightenment of the Buddha. Many Mumbai Buddhists spend the day worshipping at temples; they also decorate their houses, refrain from eating meat and carry out charitable acts, including buying caged birds to set free!
Buddha's life and teachings have affected millions and he has even been revered as an avatar (disciple) of God by Hindus. Bodhgaya, the place of enlightenment, to this day remains one of the most sanctified places of pilgrimage for the entire Hindu world.

This makes for a very special day in Mumbai. Capture the spirit at the Buddhist Temple in Worli and at Siddharth College near Flora Fountain.

Please note: this holiday occurs at the May/June full moon, and sources might sometimes differ as to when this is exactly. Some sources give the date of Vesak as a month later in leap years. Please check with the local tourist office before making travel arrangements.
