Thousands of locals descend on famous seaside promenade, Chowpatty Beach, for sunset strolls, savoury bhel puri snacks, and pony rides - although the Arabian Sea is not for swimming. Head for Chowpatty to ride on the huge, human-powered Ferris wheel.
Chowpatty is Mumbai's most famous beach, fringed by Marina Drive. During the day it is the hangout of the happily unemployed, and when the sun goes down the atmosphere is more like a carnival, with astrology readings, plays, monkey shows and even yoga demonstrations. Watch out during the monsoon season - 15-foot waves can rise over the barrier to spray passing cars and pedestrians.
