The whitewashed Haji Ali Mosque, containing the tomb of the Muslim saint Haji Ali, sits at the end of a long causeway protruding into the Arabian Sea off the coast of Mumbai. The causeway is unprotected, so the thousands who make the pilgrimage to the mosque each week can only do so at low tide. Haji Ali renounced all his wordly possessions before making a pilgrimage to Mecca. Legend has it that he died on his way to Mecca and his body, in its casket, floated back to Mumbai to the spot where the mosque stands today.
