The Sanjay Gandhi National Park, 45km north of downtown Mumbai, offers the chance to experience a vast swathe of pristine rainforest with rich wildlife and fascinating caves.
The park has a wealth of biodiversity, including tigers, leopards, monkeys, deer, reptiles, flora and birds. Towards the highest point lie the Kanheri Caves, a complex of Buddhist temples hewn from the rock, dating from the 1st century BC to the 9th century AD (it is also possible to visit the caves separately from the park).
