South Korea: Tips On Dining

South Korea has more restaurants than hotels and every region is famous for some type of food. You can usually figure out what that specialty is because seemingly every restaurant in the area will feature it.

Korean food can range from the downright cheap to upscale, but cuisine from other countries will always be more expensive. Outside of large cities, you won't find very many restaurants providing anything but Korean (or Korean versions of Chinese or Japanese) cuisine, other than the occasional fried chicken or pizza joint.

Restaurant hours vary wildly depending on where the place is located and whether or not they serve breakfast. Koreans don't differentiate among breakfast, lunch, or dinner and will have rice three meals a day. Some places will open at 7 or 9 in the morning and close at 1am, while others will open for just lunch and dinner, from around 11am to 9pm. One thing for sure is that Koreans love to eat, so there's no shortage of restaurants to choose from.

Hotels will usually have a Korean, Chinese/Japanese, and Western-style restaurant. They're always high in price, but the quality will vary. If you want anything other than Korean food, you'll find the widest variety in Seoul.

By the way, tipping is not necessary and taxes are usually included in the price of the meal, except in some high-end establishments.
