Munich has established a regular Long Night of Museums. Around 90 of the city's museums and galleries stay open through the evening until 2am. The €15 ticket gives you access to all of them - heaven for the culture vulture.
Participants can join a tour or go for a personal selection of the city's wide-ranging establishments, using either specially-organised shuttle buses (from Odeonsplatz) or the regular buses, underground, trams and trains. Lots of music and parties accompany the evening, which attracts upwards of 40,000 people.

Munich's abundance of fine museums is led by the Neue Pinakothek (19th century) and the Deutsches Museum, one of the world's best science museums. The Pinakothek der Moderne houses 20th-century collections of painting, design and graphic arts. The Haus der Kunst hosts travelling blockbuster exhibitions, while the Bavarian National Museum is home to a rich collection of both fine and decorative art demonstrating Bavaria's long artistic history.

Smaller museums like the Villa Stuck and the Lenbachhaus testify to the city's role as home to an early 20th-century avant garde in painting. If art's not your thing, then perhaps the BMW Museum will start your motor racing.
