The smell of gingerbread, mulled wine and roasted chestnuts fills the air at the Munich Christkindlmarkt, the Christmas market where row after row of colourful stalls line Munich's Marienplatz.
Steeped in festive tradition, the market warms the wintry heart of the Bavarian capital. Thousands of twinkling fairy lights, bauble-laden branches and carol singers on every corner are enough to put even the meanest Scrooge in the Yuletide spirit. For those in need of a little gift inspiration, there's plenty to be had here: figurine nutcrackers, hand-blown glass decorations, intricate nativity figures and Christmas candles all make great stocking fillers.

Just a stone's throw away from the Alps, Munich is often snow-covered at this time of year, adding to the seasonal atmosphere. Just the place for those dreaming of a white Christmas...
