14 June 1158 was a big day for Munich - the date of the city's founding by Duke Henry the Lion. The Stadtgrɒndungsfest celebrates this birthday between Marienplatz and Odeonplatz every year with vast quantities of beer and sausages.
The festival features lots of music and street performances, including processions in colourful medieval costume. The party is set in the midst of Munich's key attractions - such as the New and Old Town Hall (Neues Rathaus and Altes Rathaus) and the Frauenkirche cathedral, whose 100-metre high onion-top towers dominate the skyline.
