Few cities surpass the artistic heritage of Florence, and now the city stakes its claim for a place in the modern art world with this spectacular international Biennale, held every two years at the Fortezza da Basso.
The festival, which started in 1997, explores modern art, drawing particularly on the city's native - and limitless - artistic culture. But with more than 800 exhibitors from 72 countries taking part, the Florence Biennale goes well beyond local art.

Some of the confirmed events in 2009 include a painting exhibition from the "Chinese Myths" series by Chinese artist Shu Yong, who is also guest of honor, and virtual-world works by the Ars Electronica Centre, the world's oldest digital art museum based in Linz.
