One of the oldest music festival in Italy, and one of the most famous, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino was founded in 1933 in Florence and features two months of opera, concerts, ballet and exhibitions.
The preliminary programme in 2009 suggests a feast of opera and theatre, with performances ranging from Richard Wagner's Gotterdammerung, conducted by Zubin Mehta, to Shakespearean masterpieces such as Macbeth, interpreted by Compagnia Lavia-Anagni.

The complete programme is published on the Maggio Musicale website when it is available.
