From its unassuming beginnings as the family-run Good Day Ranch to its inauguration as the City Zoo, the land and animals of the Corrocio family have always held a special place in the hearts of the Austin community. Now covering a 100-acre site and featuring over 250 animals, it is one of the largest zoos in the southern states.
The zoo didn't formally become the premier animal sanctuary in Austin until 1994, a move that was made to mark the project's rapid expansion since 1990. Nowadays it attracts over 200,000 visitors a year, all eager to peruse the 104 different species on the zoo's books.
As for the stars of the show, the animals include Bengal tigers, American black bears, African lions, Bennet's wallabies and a vast number of monkeys. The zoo's aims include rescue, rehabilitation, education and habitat preservation.
